Volvo S60 R-help me please!!!
« on: 10 November 2008, 18:39 »
Guys and girls,....

I have a problem,...my back problem has come back and me doc thinks its to do with the seats in the Golf???

I have an ED30 dsg with all the toys and may have to sell her as I'm currently on 33k miles a year and my back won't put up with the ride for much longer,...I love the car to bits but,.....

Anyways, my Dads mate has a 2007 Volvo S60R for sale, 300 bhp awd with all the kit and he only wants £13k for it (21k miles on the clock). Now I've driven the Volvo before on long trips and always got out feeling totally ok, not so with the Golf.

I can't afford to have both and value my health so have to really seriously start looking around.

What do you guys think and more importantly, what do you think about the Volvo and the price being offered???

I know this is all about Golfs, however I'm between a rock and a hard place, your opinions really matter.

Thanks for any responses.

I would not be getting rid of my MK5 because my doctor THINKS it might be the seats in it. There are plenty of members on here and non of us have had back problems due to the seats in our Golfs. I would get some who really knows what they are doing (I cant remember what a back person is called lol) and get them to take a look, maybe show them how you sit in the car. It might just be you and how you sit in it rather than the seat. Just seem like a drastic action to take on something your doctor says MIGHT be the problem.

Sympathise with you telboy!  I drive 170 GT 200 miles min daily and have ed 30 for weekends. I am off for MRi and Dexa scan tomorrow to find long standing problems with chronic back pains and sciatica (never could spell!.....looks about right though! )
My doctor has never mentioned it might be my car seats causing the problem??............my other half did suggest though that the DSG makes me more relaxed when driving!....no left leg to worry about in traffic!  :undecided: When the 170 goes will definately consider DSG next time as we love it in the Ed 30. Have had Golf's for last 9 years; perhaps that's why I have bad back??????? Would be a bit drastic to  swap car on doctors say so!

Try reading this and setting up your seat (unless you alresady have!)

If not, it maybe easier to buy different seats like cookiemonster suggests

Trust me, I'm not changing just because the doc says so, it's a bit more invloved than that and has been going on for some time and through the process of elimination we think it's the seats in the Golf,......

Car seats? Depends on how long you spend sitting in them. If it's for quick journeys, shouldn't be an issue. If you have long daily drives, you need something that will support you appropriately.

The only way to find out what is the exacerbating factor is to MRI your spine with you in your normal postures. This is impossible.

I find sitting in the GTI really comfortable but this weekend, I had to adjust the seats and when I tried adjusting them back, I couldn't get the seat into the right position, so I had a slight backache throughout the journey.

Anything other than lying flat and floating on a cloud will place stress on your spine.

Try test-driving in other cars if possible. The volvo seats might be that bit more comfier but there might be better seats still.

That's a tough one. I also have back problems and find the Golf seats ok, but not perfect. I drove a Volvo V50 for 700 miles in one day a few months ago and got out without any aches, so I think they are the best in this respect.

However, I don't really rate the S60. They are fast in a straight line, but the handling is a joke compared to the Golf. I wouldn't want to swap unless it was crippling!

1 question first...have you ever driven the volvo R before?  if so then fair enough but if not I think you should. Also dont go auto/tip cos they are garbage,  manual is the best and the g/box can handle some good power. Rica do a remap for the R which takes it from 250 to 310bhp it also uses the same haldex system has the R32 but doesn't feel any where has grippy has the Golf R.

The Volvo R will do approx 26-28mpg and the sound track is near on the R32 v6 with a little bit of scooby thrown in  You really need to go on the Volvo.org forum and speak to some ppl over there cos the volvo does suffer from some bad niggles i.e instrument cluster problems, wheel bearings, a/c, etc, etc.  The only other thing I would say is go for the V70R rather than the S60.  Or just keep the golf and get some recaro erganomic(sp) seats or the similar one to the older S3 I think they are the recaro trend?

Sorry about the long post but you will be sadly dissapointed at the newer volvo's stick with your golf.
