Just bought a Gti
« on: 10 November 2008, 10:49 »
Hi there,

I have just purchased myself an 8v mk2 Gti, to see me through while my other car is off the road for the winter. I thought I would join this forum as the Lexus forum has been invaluable to me.

I am picking the car up this week, but am told my the owner it will need a new steering rack boot and new rear axle bushes for MOT. It may also need a tyre or two, but that's not a problem.

Just wandered if I could ask the Golf experts on here how easy these two jobs would be. I'm sure the parts will be cheap, but what is involved in the fitting? Is it something I might be able to attempt on my own? I have some mechanical knowledge, and some tools, though not a lot of either! I'm trying to keep the cost down, as this is my second car and these are hard times!

Does anyone know of a decent workshop manual available for download for this car? That would probably help a bit.

Any help/advice gratefully received...

There's a wealth of info here, try a search as there is probably a thread where someone else has done the same/asked the same questions.

Get yourself a Haynes Manual or the Bentley Manual

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Have never done the job, but know that lots of well-experienced guys get those rear axle bushes done in a professional garage, who is able to press them in with a machine. Better get a quote from a serious garage who is up to the job.

I wouldnt bother doing the rear bushes, I have done them twice but never again! Steering rack is fiddly but not too bad. Ben
