i had this problem when i took a potential customer for a test drive when i was selling my mk2. Fortunately my old man said it was only the fixing clips that had worked loose. If you can try and apply some kind of sealant before you sqeeze the clips back on to stop it working loose easily again.
hope that helps mate.

I've got exactly the same prob as Overseer and Len, originally it was the heat shield below the cat that had worked loose. I fixed that with big jubilee clips, but now the noise I think is the shield body side of the cat. Need to get underneath and get a mate to help, but nothing obvious to stop it as the metal is so thin.....also happens at 2-3000rpm.....help please ???

ditto!  I have had the front heat sheilf fitted back twice - now it's rattling again - but somewhere else as I checked the front shield last weekend!

Not sure I can be ar5sed to sort it though.

"Turn the stereo up" [as my g/f would say]!

easyfix solution - a few large blobs of sealant/mastic under the heatshield will do!

Thought i'd resurrect this one.

Had chance to have a good look under my car Sat morn. (change drive belt) up on garage ramps.

Front heat shield o.k.

The one thats resonating now is the one under the CAT - mine seems to have developed two cracks one either side of the front fixing point.
So cant really see an easy solution to it.
1. Turn the volume up.
2. Get a new CAT (very drastic/expensive)
3. Put up with it and play making it sing!
4. Rip the fu*kin thing off!!!!!

Number 4 is favourite atm - but havin fun when i'm in the mood to play with the revs and see how many different sounds i can get from it!
