advice pls.. exhaust has developed a rattle..
« on: 01 June 2004, 09:56 »
my exhaust has developed a slight rattle..

i'm sure its just something thats worked its way loose a bit.. (have a feeling it may have worked its way loose or been caused when the new starter was fitted to my car a little while ago).

i dont notice it all the time, it appears to be mostly when the car is at low revs, often when reversing. however it doesnt do it all the time.

how can i track where its coming from so i can work out a solution?

(yes a nice powerflow would be a nice option... but only if its *really* needed)

best way to check if it is your exhaust is to get under your car, it might also be some thing else under there, it was my heat shield on my old car.

I did take a bit of a look under. I can't really see anything obviously wrong, but i'm not sure what i'm looking for.

Get the car on stands, start the engine , get a mate to rev it while you look underneath it.

Just something to check for, shortly after I got mine it developed a rattle that really pissed me off. Basically it hit a harmonic when it was idling just after you started it. Mine turned out to be the heat sheild over the back box that had come loose on one side and was resting on the back box. Pushed it back in place (the clip just grips on the thread of a bolt stud). It's been silent ever since. Have heard from others with mk3s and mk2s that it's pretty common.

Hope this helps!  :)

Mine had the rattle when I first bought it but that was cured with some big jubilee clips. Unfortunately the rattle has returned and it appears to be from the metal/heat shield that is attached to the underside of the car as opposed to the Cat.....dont know how to stop this one????? Also have a knocking from the exhaust when accelerating but I think the rubbers need replacing as they are flexing too much and the bolts on the o-clamps are hitting the support bracket 3/4 of the way down the car?? Any ideas on cures for either probs  ???

it's usually a busted weld on a heat shield somewhere, happened to me before and i just ripped the shield off, problem solved  ;D (just dont park it on any grass..)

ok... managed to get it up on ramps saturday morning.

the heatshield on the exhaust, and the actual exhaust itself are fine.

the problem appears to be what i assume is another heatshield that sits up above the exhaust on the floor pan itself for a lot of the length of the car. think its made of think aluminium, we gave it a bit of a bash with a hammer, and it appeared to solve it for a lil bit, but now its started doing it again. :(

Didnt read this until after i posted mine in Garage section.

Sounds like we got similar problems. I hear mine between 2500 and 3000 revs.
With more than one heatshield this is gonna be fun to sort out! Not!
