Distributer not working
« on: 09 November 2008, 16:47 »
Think ive found why my cars running poorly. At the back on the dizy theres loads of play where it meets the cam. Ive bought a new dizzy, connected it up exactly the same and it just wont start . The Timing ive done the same plugs are defernatly in the right way. Yet if i put the old one back in it will start. Has any one had any issues in buying new distributers. Could it be faulty?

Sounds like the plugs are the wrong way you might think they are in correctly, but there should be no play when the retainer blot is firmly down!
You talking about the whole distributer and not just the cap?

plugs are defernatly in the right way as I didnt remove them. I had to leave the old dizzy cap on as my plugs didn't fit in the new cap as the connections are different.

Could I have the wrong dizzy?

Ok sounds like the wrong cap mate if it works before on the old one and not the new one?
the fact the plugs don't fit right is a big indication fella?
Like I said as its the cap we are talking about soon as those brackets clip onto the cap there should be no play are you sure you have the cap the right way round if so get your money back mate and take the old one as a part reference?

the old dizy cap (leads fit ok) fits tight to the new dizy with no play.  Are the rotary arms matched to the cap, the old rotary arm won't fit the slot in the new dizzy. At the moment ive got the new dizy and rotary arm and the old cap on, and bugger all is happening.  Its all rather confusing

If there is an old earth strap on the dizzy housing make sure you use the old housing you should be hearing a arc if its fitting all wrong unless the earth strap is earthing the spark away? Rotor arm should fit both caps hence why I think you have the wrong cap?
Provide some part numbers people here might know correct part numbers for the 16V its side mounted correct you might have a 8V one?

ok on my invoice from gsf part number for dizzy is 051-905-237X. On the actual box for the dizzy it says 051-905-205B. Not sure if they are the same or i just have been given the wrong dizzy?

Done a quick google search and its coming up as the right part for a MK2 16v!

Take the cap off, turn your engine over to TDC, line up the camwheel like zis:

Then undo the 2 bolts holding the dizzy and spin it till the rotor arm lines up with the notch in the edge of the dizzy like zis:

Then remove & refit the spark plug leads so that #1 goes in where the rotor arm is pointing, firing order is correct as you mapped it out above, 1 3 4 2 anticlockwise.

Hi
THe new dizzy came with the hall sender inside it, ya.
I would check the working of the hall sender on the new dizzy in case it is kaput.
