Oil Leak
« on: 08 November 2008, 13:52 »
Sorry if this question has been asked before. I have a 52 plate 130 GTTDI and have started to notice oil spots on the drive its concrete so is more obvious you cant see it when its been parked on tarmac. A mechanic has had a look and told me not to worry about it its oil collection round the intercooler and nothing to worry about he says all diesels do it. I havent noticed any running problems or anything like that but not sure if its normal. Can anyone help or tell me what to check

actually look to see where the fresh oil is coming from. locate the source and move from there. surely you didn't need to ask on a forum how to do that?

Someone always has to come up with a smart comment. What I was actually more interested in was if what the mechanic was telling me was was correct that all Diesels have a slight leakage from the intercooler IF that is the case I would be chasing something that wasn't a fault just a characteristic of a Diesel therefor wasting my time. I have never had a Diesel before so wouldnt know. Its not that straight forward with work and everything to get the car where I can get under it to look properly so just thought if anyone had experienced the same problem if it is a problem or knew if it was standard it would give me a starting point thats all

as Rhyso has said you shouldn't have a leak.

the hoses that run from the turbo to the intercooler and back (to make up the charge air cooling system) are designed to be pretty much air tight, to prevent boost leak, and thus shouldn't have oil leaks either.

how much oil are we talking and is it defiantly from around the intercooler?

if i was you, I'd try and check around the hose connectors, to see which one is leaking, aswell as inspecting the sump plug to check the leak isn't coming from there.  if one of the connectors is leaking then, is could just need a new washer/seal or worst cast new hose.

ps welcome to the forum!

so when i say that it somehow qualifies for a smart arsed answer?

2 + 2 = ?

it was your final sentance that made you a smart arse.

in future why don't you try and help people rather than criticise their ability - not everyone is comfortable working on cars

Cheers guys
I just wanted a bit of advise cos a few people have said to me 'Oh its a Diesel they all leak a bit of oil from the intercooler' but I wasnt sure my self. We are talking a patch of around the size of a 1p coin every couple of days. I have managed to get a quick look under it and its def not the sump or anything like that its def oil round and on the intercooler its obviously collecting on the intercooler and then every so often it drips. Im going to try and get it somewhere at the weekend where it can be put on a ramp ill check all the hoses and make sure none of those are loose etc
