G60 head on a mk2 gti won't start please help
« on: 07 November 2008, 13:52 »
Hi,
I wonder if any one has done this before?
I have just put an 8v G60 head on my totaly standard 1991 MK2 golf GTI and it wont start.
I have had the timing confirmed as being ok.
There is fuel coming through and there is a good spark.
If I heat up the plugs it will fire once then not again.
If I turn it over with no plugs in it then the fuel "mist" is aparant from all cylinders although the sequence if not always consistant. ???
Also there is not much oil coming up to the cam's.
Its all set to go with water and oil and turns over ok but just wont fire.
The head was refurbished and it has new plugs for a standard 8v engine. I have used the original cams from the original head.

Could the ECU be pooring in too much petrol?
Is there any reason why the cams are not covered in oil. Is that normal until you get it started for the 1st time?
Any help would be much appreciated....

1st step does the fuel pump rpime or run continuously when you turn the key 1 click.
next step is to double check the timing, one thing that can sometimes catych you out is the cam pulleys have a punch mark on both sides as its also used for the intermediate shaft, if you put it on back to front the marks dont line up!
Have you visually confirmed the cam lobes on #1 are pointing up and way from each other at TDC, like this |\ /|

Also check the rotor arm, it will spin freely if the belt is removed which catches some people out the 1st time, me included
Make sure the rotor is pointing at the notch in the edge of the dizzy lip, and fit the #1 spark lead to where its pointing at.  Firing order from there is 1 3 4 2 clockwise.  Then just verify the bottom end is at TDC by shining a torch down sparky hole #1.

Appologies if you know all this but its always worth mentioning!

If all that checks out, has the blue temp sender been replaced recently, a faulty one will prevent a digi mk2 from starting.  Get a new one from VW if there is any doubt, only £13ish :)

Thanks for the info.
I had another chap confirm the timing was ok at the weekend. (He works for Audi so should have been ok.........)
Still unable to get the old girl firing.
The thing that gets me is that when I turn it over with no plugs in she should fire like a machine gun?
All cylinders in quick succession..?
It does that intermittently but sometimes seams to fire in pairs...

It was quite a good starter with the original head on but I think I will take your advise and change the blue temp sender. I assume this is for cold start?
Thanks again. Help is appreciated

the sender is used to adjust the fueling from cold all the way to hot, it is constantly checked by the ecu :)

when you say 'fire' do you mean the sparkplugs or the sound of air from the open spark plug holes?
