gt diesel to gti tfsi transplant
« on: 06 November 2008, 19:41 »
Hi all

Ive got a 140 gt diesel with the bluefin map on and although not slow its still got that tractor sound   Now ive seen the tfsi engine on ebay with every thing including the gearbox, ecu, clocks and any thing else needed to do the conversion the only other obvious thing I can think of is the fuel tank and pump.  Now ive done a few conversions namely a vectra gsi 2.5 and a pug 205 gti but the golf looks a simple one with the added bonus that the front end can be taken apart and the engine can be slid forward out of the bay...Ive got a engine hoist and the tools but will the electrics be a problem?  I suppose that is my only worry.

Just has a side note in peoples opinion would you do any thing to the engine to make it stronger or more power????

Phew, that's a very big set of questions there

I doubt many people on here (if any!) will have done an engine transplant for a MKV. Electrics tend to get more and more complicated with each successive generation of VW's, but the good thing is that they also tend to be less complicated in terms of wiring due to electronics taking over from electrical wiring.

The TFSI engine is capable of taking in excess of 300bhp and 300lbft of torque, so should be okay unless you are really wanting to go for a big turbo/power upgrade.

Hi Hurdy im glad you've answered my Q cos i wanted to ask if you've noticed a big difference between the light given off from your std one to your new projector ones?

As for the conversion sorry about the amount of Q ive just got a head full of car at the moment and I was thinking of changing and getting an RS4 but in the present climate im now thinking to keep this and spend abit on the engine conversion...ive got it how I want it in the looks dept, sorted collies just need brakes and engine.

The projector lights are much better than the stock ones. I think this is more to do with the fact that the bulbs that I have in them are Osram Nightbreakers. They aren't quite as good as xenons' but I can see much better than I could before and the intensity, spread and range is better too.

Dear Sir,

I appreicate your enthusiasm but will such a transplant be viable ? I mean if you were going to do it, supposing you don't already have at least standard GTi brakes and suspension, in addition to the cost of the motor, which - if I was going to undertake such a conversion would have to be an ED30/Cupra/S3 engine - is it worth it ?  I mean you could sell your car and put the rest towards a GTi, I was looking today and there are a few 05 platers just under and below a 8k on ebay and auto trader - nice ones too  - Just seems as if there is very little point ?

I can understand what your saying Gareth but im wanting an RS4 but carnt afford it at the moment so no big payments.  The other thing is my car is a cat-c wright off so not going to get book figures for it, more or less why I bought it cos I was going to do it up how I wanted it.   But I stupidly went in an RS4 not so long ago and was addicted now im saving for one but just want some thing to play with for the moment.

If I could find a S3 engine then that would be better cos not much to do with that Id be happy with the power although a remap wouldn't hurt

It's seriously gonna cost you and that will vary depending on what you get with the 'engine kit', you'll want as much of the wiring as possible from the engine bay.

One I've had rattling around in my head for ages is an Octavia 4x4 FSi transplanted with a TFSi engine.  When you start getting to the higher HP/Torque you really need to be 4wd.

On the plus side if your current engine is good that will have a resale value.

Thanks Stu most of the engines for sale do include every thing needed...there is a few that sell them that only sell the engine with nothing attached but I did see one from Awesome not so long ago and they had every thing.

My engine has only done 50k miles so should get some money back on that.
