Cam belt
« on: 29 May 2004, 01:38 »
I bought my golf driver 91 (75000 miles) last october, it doesnt have a service history (I gambled and won) the car is running smoothly.

My question is: is it worth changing the cam belt? and what would happen if it snapped while driving, is it goodbye to the engine ? and how much would it cost to repair?

cheers

Its always worth while changing the cambelt, wether you have service history or not. Certainly puts your mind at ease.

Bent valves is one of the problems you could have with a timing belt snap.

for the money it costs mate it's definately worth it. If it snaps it will bugger valves and generally screw up the top of your engine, can chip the top of the pistons and everything...end up costing you a fortune to fix.

change it, and change the belt tensioner too. peace of mind for thousands of miles  ;D
