MK2 GTI 8V Leak
« on: 01 November 2008, 16:48 »
Just took my car out as it only gets used at the weekend now and when I got to my drive and opened up the garage door I noticed that there was a trail of oil. I put it in the garage and it has left all of its oil on the garage floor.

When I jacked the car up I thought maybe I had knocked the sump but it is bone dry and the sump plug is still in place. Without getting a torch I can't see where the oil is coming from but it is just behind the sump.

Anyone got any ideas on what is behind the sump that would cause such a leak.

It could be from the headgasket? Your going to have to investigate by getting right under her and having a good look.

Had a look at the car and it is power steering fluid which can only be better than having an oil leak.

Just need to have a look at a Haynes manual and see where it is coming from.

The bottle has been totally emptied.

check the power steering pump and the connections and the seals. i wouldn't be expecting the original seals and pump to have lasted all this time. mine has had a new pump and overhaul last year. get it sorted because running the rack dry won't be doing it any good.

Thanks for the advice but seeing as the fluid is only leaking on part of my driveway I know it only started leaking just before I got home.

I have pushed the car in and out of my garage until I find the source.

Does anyone have any diagrams for the power steering system as the Haynes manual does not have a lot of information on it?

find the pump, find the rack and follow where the lines go

Also if Im right the power steering pump may be a possibility, only when the engines running the seal at the bottom of the pump (If you look laying on your front facing the car) It will be lower right I think.

This has a tendancy to go too.

Just noticed your problem...

I had the same last week, lost oil and loss of PAS with a horrible noise.

Garage have told me that a hose / pipe has worn and a new one is around £150 and seemly difficult to fit.

Something to do with hydraulic return.......

Can anyone please advise, either where I can down load a diagram or if what they are saying sounds ok??

Many thanks
