Crunching sound when turning steering wheel
« on: 01 November 2008, 10:56 »
On the underground parking at work I suddenly noticed that when I drive slowly into/out of parking space and turn the steering wheel, exactly when I turn the wheel and when I turn it back to have fronts straight forward, I hear low crunching noise.  This noise does not come from tyres or from my rattling interior, it comes from the front somewhere.
What could it be? Is it steering rack problem?

I had something like this, but it was just the plastic cowling that had been incorrectly fitted around the wheel, it maybe that, try driving round and pushing the cowling about see if that cures it, on mine it was the top piece and on the fron there are little thin prongs, one of these were bent over and therefore rubbed against the steering rod, i bent the plastic bit back and all was ok

Is it when you turn the wheel to the left?  I had this and the stealer changed the rack.

Mines just got a lot worse in this colder weather - it's gone from a slight scraping noise to a really noticeable creaking

Is it a plasticky noise you have ?

in the pic below you will see the top piece is removed, you take it off by putting a blunt plastic instrument between the top and bottom cowling along the join, it just pops off, it flips up from the front as it has a feeble hinge arrangment at the back which will pop out anyway, you dont need to remove the trim under the speedo if you dont want to either, on the very front of the top cowling you will see two prongs (or should do), they look like snakes teeth and are very thin and bend easily, its one of these that were bent on mine, i put it back straight and it slipped back down into the bottom cowling (see yellow arrows in pic) making sure they didnt bend again and the noise has gone away :-)

Its a known fault with GTI's it can be fixed under warrenty, take it to stealer.
