Lighting loom
« on: 30 October 2008, 10:55 »
Right further investigation has revealed that the wires coming from the light switch have melted all the way to the fusebox.  has anyone changed this loom before.. RJ??  It it all that hard or just fiddly. Cheers

luckily for you you have a J reg, so the loom from switch to fusebox is seperate from the rest o the car loom, easy swap just make sure you get one from a 90spec MK2 Golf or Jetta :)
sort the reason it happened first though, my guess would be the dim dip resistor wires havd shorted on the chassis, its on the chassis near the driver side headligh, size n shape of a paclk o polos.  follow the wires from it and you'll fined a 2 pin plug, disconnect this and check the wires havent rubbed thru anywhere elae.  Then bin the resistor.

Other thing that can cause loom meltage is using the wrong headlight switch, there were at least 3 different switches so make sure the switch you use has the same number of pins as the headlight loom plug!

Cheers.  I forgot to add that it was my other golf(89) and it was the wiring from the switch to fusebox.  I had the dash off today and it joins up with all sorts.  luckily It was only the live feed wire that melted so I grabbed a light switch from the scrappers, joined it and the plug to my loom and replaced the burnt wire with a single replacement.  Will do for now, I really didnt wanna rip too many wires out!  Many thanks, Ben.

ah yes, doin this on an 89 is a right mission it joins up everywhere! as long as your splicing job is good you'll be ok.  Just make sure you fix the original problem that casued it so it doesnt happen again! my guess as i said would be the dim dip resistor.
