brake disc temp
« on: 28 October 2008, 20:23 »
ok, this maybe an odd question, but should all my brake discs be the same temperature after a drive ?. I was only checking them as I had a suspicion the handbrake wasnt fully releasing on one wheel...turns out it wasn't binding....but I noticed the rear passenger side disc was a little hotter than the other side and the front drivers disc a little hotter then the other front....just wondered is there anything to worry about

Can I enquire as to how you checked the temperatures?

LOL, I wouldn't advise touching the disc with your hand to check the brake temps!!

Brakes can operate at temperatures of up to (and in motorsport above) 700 degrees celcius, so they will feel hot even from a distance.

As for the possible imbalance of temperatures, maybe there is a little bit of imbalance there as you could feel it when driving. I'd take it in to get the brakes checked at an MOT station and just ask for the brakes to be tested and take it from there.

I used to own a Nova SR (hey these were the first car dream when I was 17!) and one of the front brakes stuck on once - drove 7miles home and when I got there the front disc was glowing red! I didnt need to put my hand near it to tell, you could feel it standing next to it.

Anyway, thought I would share that one with you
