What have I done?
« on: 28 October 2008, 12:26 »
Replaced the tappets on the 8v recently, which took about 2 weeks
Have reconnected everything, pretty sure the timing is ok and the engine rattle is now gone. However, it's running really rough. It now idles at about 1400 rpm, was 900 ish and doesn't want to rev above about 3000, keeps coughing on me. I remember the seeign that for the cam belt tension you should be just able to twist it 90 degrees lengthways, is this true?
Also, the MFA readout on the dash has gone crazy showing random lines.
Not sure what to do next, maybe try to reset the ecu or something? Any suggestions?

90deg twist on the longest part, if you have the belt off/loose the intermediate shaft will spin freely, and since it runs the dizzy on an 8v wthis will result in the ign timign being out :)
put it all back to TDC and pop off the dizzy cap, the rotor arm will prob be a few degrees off :)

Figured out what I did. Broke the rotor arm on dizzy so it didn't go properly into the slot when setting up the timing before, was at least 90 degrees out. Set it up again, got a new rotor arm and now she lives!

But I now do have a ticking sound which I think is coming from the throttle body. Any ideas?

This is when idling. When you replace the tappets do you need a while for them to settle down/ bed in properly?

Maybe the ticking sound is your injectors? I believe they're supposed to make a ticking sound anyway.

Perhaps you couldn't hear them before because your worn tappets were drowning them out?
