Front Mask Installation Help...Pleaseeeee!
« on: 27 October 2008, 11:33 »
I have got myself the OSIR front mask and I am having difficulties deciding how to attach it. I think I remember Joe saying he got his bonded on at a bodyshop, is it bonded over the current grill or did they take off the stock one to do it? I am going to take the number plate plinth off but im not sure what to do next.

Anyone have any ideas how i can attach the number plate without drilling through either the plate or the grill? I was thinking double sided tape but Chris (WhiteGTI) doesn't think the tape will be strong enough!

mine is bonded ontop of the original plate, i also had the problem of the plate, so i just left it off

i took it to my mte who owns a bodyshop and he just "glued" it on for free, too about 5 hours to dry thow. as for the plate, you could get it printed as a sticker and stick it onto the cf bit. im not sure if it would look good thow  :undecided:

Thats what I plan to do, as I think leaving the plate off completely isnt an option for where I live (Police are quite sh!tty about it). I don't think there is a decent looking way around it. Number plate re-location onto the bonnet looks cr@p IMO, and also re-location to underneath one of the headlights (providing you dont have headlamp wash) looks wayyy too lopsided. Fixing to the lower grille will inhibit cooling, and fixing to the lower grille so that it hangs down on the lower splitter looks like the car is sticking its front teeth out - not a good look AT ALL!!!

i think the best would be to get a trimmed down plate 2/3 size and put it on the front splitter but to one side, this imo would look smart

or get a trimmed plate and some of them super sticky outdoor pads from "do it all" and stick it onto the carbon.

I run 2/3rds plate in normal position (no plinth)
and sticky pads are fine (just make sure area is clean and you warm the area/pads with a hairdryer first )
Although if they are really strict round your area then you wont get away with a 2/3rds plate anyway!

other options

REGAL car runs a stick on the bonnet front plate : you say you didnt like this?

You could buy one of the 'plate flippers' , which you could allow it to slide under front splitter lip with the ign off.
That way at shows etc looks 'clean' but legal when driving (does look cack tho!)

Yeah - all good suggestions John..

Seen those plate flipper things - quite intrigued, but never had the time to follow it up! Thanks for reminding me :)

Run a 2/3 plate on my other car, but I think as the plate follows the contrours of the car it doesn't attract as much attention. I think it would be more noticeable on the GTI :(

....My front mask is bonded on top of the stock mask - It's the only carbon piece I have which isn't a total replacement.

Any kind of sticky tape or pads won't work when subjected to the heat of Summer - The mounting position is on a curve and plates are straight, so the tension and tendency to lift is constant.

I'm tempted to remove the somewhat useless number plate base mount.

It looks fab , but its VERY noticeable.
I got stopped at a set of lights the other day for a 'census' , got asked the normal stuff , then the presiding traffic officer (to ensure the census takers dont get abuse), politely 'suggested' that I change my 'kid on motorcycle sized plate' for a legal one

....I'm sure you'll have to change it to get through your MOT too.
