Replacing ignition lock on Mk1?
« on: 25 October 2008, 14:52 »
Ok, when i got this Mk1 the keys were lost (which i wasn't told about until after i agreed to take it and it was on the way to my place ), so i took the drivers door lock to a local locksmith and they cut me a key for £20. Took that home and the key doesn't work in any other lock. So removed the passenger door lock and the boot lock and took them back down yesterday and picked them up today and the guy tells me that all three are different locks and cut me a key for each of them, and even gave me another one to try (dunno how/why, i reckon he made a balls of one of them and decided to give me it anyway lol). Anyhow, took all four keys back home and not one of them fit the ignition.

I've stripped everything away from the ignition, but i'm having difficulties removing the ignition lock barrel. I think i'll just buy a new ignition lock with keys from ebay for £11 delivered (or maybe eurocarparts would be cheaper? says out of stock on their website?), but need to know how to get the existing one out, so can anyone explain to me how to do it?

I imagine theres a section in the haynes manual on how to do it, but i don't have one unfortunately  :undecided:

hi mate on later models you need to drill a 3mm hole in the mounting so you can access a locking tab on the lock barrel but it is difficult to explain, you need a haynes manual or if someone on here could scan the picture, try contacting rubjohnny he is the font of knowledge and wisdom and could explain it better than me

Its a Y reg so would say thats an early one? (i'm new to MK1s  :lipsrsealed:)

I'll get a photo of what i'm left with after stripping all the ignition away and maybe someone could point out where i need to drill.
