Reduce engine noise
« on: 24 October 2008, 08:12 »
Hi guys, have any of you done anything, or is there anything on the market, which will reduce the classic diesel engine noise, and/or vibration from the VW lump?

yep - don't switch it on

i find using the correct spec oil helps a lot as she idles more smoothly and quietly - also get some Forte Diesel treatment from Ebay and run that through every 5000 miles to help keep the fuel system clean

also make sure your sound proofing is in place under the bonnet and that your exhaust clamps and rubbers and engine mounts are in good order

thats about all you can do

Ok cheers, at the moment it is running on VW longlife oil as the previous owner always had that in- anything else better you think?  The sound deadening in the bonnet is pristine, so nothing can be done there- I will check the engine mounts though.  and I will be straight onto ebay for some Forte treatment now!  Cheers

I agree with that.. mine was on 20k services but have changed them ova to 10k now as it has done 87k now so think it needs a little more care & attention. All good though my m8 who is a VW mechanic said he has seen one with 300k on the clock an still going strong lol

Ok will def get the oil changed.  When I bought this car, it had done 35000 with all VW servicing.  The next VW service isn't due for about another 10k, but like you say, I want to get sort of an interim service done in between.  Apart from the oil, oil filter, is there anything else I should service this time, in the interim service???

Ok so just having the MOT done, and at the same time am having a full fuel system and sump flush, with an oil filter and longlife oil change.  Invested in some diesel treatment as well, which I'll use in a few tankfuls time so hopefully she'll be all lubed up for the winter now.  Not sure what else I can do, but I'll see if there's any notable difference when I get her back.

like Rhyso says do the oil every 10k minimum, esp if its a PD engine!  AFAIK all of the PD engines were meant to have been switched back to fixed interval, to prevent the cam wearing.

NB the oil for fixed and variable service intervals are different.

Oh ok I didn't know that- I changed the oil for 0w30 which i think is No2 still.  I spoke to VW and they use 5w30 now, so will be having that when I have the full service next year.  Already I can really feel the difference from before the full flush- feels a lot more responsive and playful again.
