I have DSG with paddles and it was just a case of removing the airbag and swapping the controls over to my current wheel. If you dont have paddles then there can be issues with the version of steering wheel control unit.

See, the buttons do come out....

So "should" be able to swap them into my steering wheel.

Back of the non MFSW may not have cut outs for DSG paddles.
Air bag wiring loom may not have additional connector for the buttons.

Mine is a Manual car, so do not have worry about cut outs for flappy paddles... only interested in the audio controls.

Hence I'm thinking it "should" be a straight forward swap of switch/button gear into my wheel in place of "blanks"

You may need VAG_COM to change the wheel profile to indicate there are buttons present seeing as it does not have paddles. If paddles are present the control unit is already enabled for button input.

I'm sure that some guy did it on the UK-Mkivs site. He listed all the parts and procedures.

Here it is:-
