Just popped to VW to get a top up bottle of 10w40 and they don't do it anymore so had to buy 5 litres :(

Hi guys, often wondered myself what to use, especially as my car used oil approx 1 Ltr every 600 miles, worrying times! But changed air mass sensor and used 10/40 recommended by my VW mechanic mates at VPH Services in Andover and the cars fine! Hardly top up at all now and runs great! Hope this helps,
Regards,
Mark.

On the basis my car has done 67k I am going to go with 5w 40 fully synth, should be the best of both worlds ;)

right i'll attempt to throw a spanner in the works ,a few months ago i did a service on a audi tt 1.8t 180bhp if memory serves me right it was  arz eng code euro car parts supplied me with 5-40 fully synthetic  which was about £18 for 5 litres and no problems at all
a few months later i brought my golf again 1.8t but aum engine code ordered service parts from eurocar parts again and the only oil they listed for the aum was 5-30 fully synthetic so i ordered it it came as a 4 litre can at £28 mmmmmmmm bu**er not enough oil so to save time i went to vw and the parts sold me Quantum Synta 5ltrs  think it was vw 503.00 at about £20 so i used this and used the stuff from euro car parts in the wifes car i took the car to germany round the ring and back with no problems at at all think i topped up about half a litre on 6000 miles ,i now have a supply of 5-30 fully synthetic 25ltrs sitting in the garage  which came foc i dropped the oil and filter a couple of weeks ago and all seems fine , so as far as reccomended eurocar parts and autodata both list 5-30 fully for the golf but why is 5-40 fully acceptable in the tt they both share the same basic block and internals so both oils should be ok i think the main thing is buy oil of a decent quality and specification and preferably a fully synthetic problems might come about if you are trying to mix synthetic with mineral oils if you are unsure then the best option would be drop oil and filter and start again at least you know where you are from then on atb andy

very interesting post this one
well two of my local vw dealerships who have serviced my 1.8T in the past have used castrol 10w 40 oil and left me a 1litre bottle for topping up with i check my oil level every week and found after long trips of a few 100 miles motorway etc that i did have to top up a small amount ocasionally but had my last service down at r-tech and now using synta gold fully synthetic 5w 30 and tbh i have done a fair few motorway trips etc since the service and the oil level is still sat at the full mark on the dipstick  and i think the engine does run well since using the synta gold so thats good enough for me and my 1.8T

....plus a more expensive option is 5w - 40 (fully synth)

Ever considered a motorcycle oil? Fully Synthetic 5W40 ACEA A3 API SL for £32

Which oil is cheaper from VW? Thread suggests that VW dealers are pushing the wrong oil.
