^^^Aye jonny I wasn't saying that you couldn't get some benefit out of 99ron fuel with a carb setup but it does involve adjusting the timing. I was saying that simply bunging 99ron in as suggested earlier in the thread would have no effect.

you were implying it would only work on cars with a knock sesnor, mk2 16v doesnt have a knock sesnor

Yes which is why running the 16v on anything with a ron value higher than 98 will have no effect on the power, the timing is already tuned for 98ron. I think you misread what I said in my original post. I said in order for a car to produce any more power from a higher ron fuel simply by putting it in the tank it needs to be equipped with a knock sensor and relevant electronics.
Simply putting this fuel in a car without this feature will have no effect unless further adjustments are made.

no i did not miss-read it, its exactly what you typed.  you said:

The higher ron means that the ignition timing can be advanced more without pinking occuring and the engine will develop more power. However for this to happen you need a car equipped with a knock sensor/injection/ecu that can adjust the timing on the fly

which is simply not true, you dont need a knock sensor for this to happen, you can adjust the timing yourself.  I was simply making this point clear ;)

^^^lol forum banter ;)

Ok well if you want to be that picky then yes any car can be re-tuned to produce more power from a higher ron fuel but you would have to use that fuel type permanently from then on.
My original post was based on the assumption (from her previous threads) that raven is unlikely to be whipping out the timing gun to retune things (sorry raven no disrespect intended). I didn't want her to be wasting money on more expensive fuel that would make no difference without the necessary adjustment being made ;)

yes and to be fair even with more timing advance you prob wouldnt see a noticable difference on 99ron fuel on a 1.3!  p.s. no need for a timing gun when doing this, on an old car you can only do it by ear! timing gun is only needed to reset back to factory

my digi has the 98 ron sticker  :undecided:

I've used that redex stuff before and it seemed to do it good (1.4 carbed fiat it was).

Can't say the knock sensors work very well in either of my cars tbh, I've had to adjust the distributor on them both over the summer to sort a little pinking, in fact now the cooler weather is here might have to tickle them back the other way a little.
