Mk2 16v Battery light problem
« on: 25 May 2004, 11:53 »
I have a mk2 16v KR, the problem is when i rev high - above about 4500rpm the battery light comes on. It goes away when i bring the revs back down again, like on the motorway if i go above 95 the light makes an apperence, but goes away again when i come down to 85.

there seems to be no great loss of power, although i have no comparison, but it seems a weird fault. Any ideas of what it could be?? I havent really tried anything as there is no massive downside, im worried i may be loosing something special at the top end!

this is going to be an alternator problem i suspect, the light means you are running off of battery, which is ok but it will run it down, is the alterantor belt slipping? get the output of your alterantor tested at agarage, should only cost a nominal fee

If it has a Bosch alternator it may be worth changing the voltage regulator-brush pack. It is mounted on the rear and held in with 2 screws, a doddle to change.
Steve.

Cheers guys, I suspected it would be an alternator fault. I had the Volt regulator changed about a year ago and that seemed to be what started the trouble (however the car was off the road b4 this so i didnt know if it was happening already).

Its not a bosch altenator iirc, i think its a cheepy refub. Is it worth getting a newer higher ampage one? Like about 90amp? I've seen one for sale somewhere on this very forum..........
