To sell, or not to sell!
« on: 19 October 2008, 10:40 »
Right. Got a bit of a dilemma here

My insurance renewal is in december and so ive been looking at what sort of prices theyre going to offer on my 1.6 driver (with 1 years ncb at 18) and it doesnt look like its going to be much under £1300.

I looked at insurance on a mk2 gti and mk3 gti and theyre both over £2400 so I dont want to take out a loan for the car :undecided:

My cars good for another 12 months but the paint isnt amazing on it so im thinking of slamming it on coilovers and some 13" wheels.

If I sell my car, I could buy a 1L polo and have the cheap insurance but then wouldnt have the same old school style

Any suggestions as my car isnt the tidyest but I dont want to change from a mk2!

You've kind of answered your own question there bud

Obviously the GTi is too expensive.
Polo 1L, you don't really want because it hasn't got the same 'style' (seen the 80's Polo's?   )
You want to keep a MK2. Thought of selling the 1.6 and getting a 1.3 or 1L MK2? Insurance on that has got to be much cheaper than the 1.6, still a MK2 and allows you to save up over the next year or 2 for a GTi

I've decided to stay with my 1.6 as the insurance is going down by more than half, £320 for  the next year thanks to HIC  :smug:

Yea bit stupid of me really :embarassed:

Wish I could go with HIC but im not 19 yet! I havent seen many 1.3's around really! but I wouldnt mind one tbh..

Next year I will be able to afford a gti because my insurance should be lower again.. as long as mk2 gtis dont keep raising in price!

I think that our 1.6's are insurance group 9 arent they?

iirc there isn't a lot of differance between 1.3 and 1.6 insurance wise

you have to rember that your insurnace has VW and GOLF  tax added by the insurance man  that all ontop of under 30 tax ,  sh!tter ain't it

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Certainly is a sh!tter!

If I got a 1.3 I think I would regret it and want my one back

He prob does....prob wants the whole engine over a 1.6 but it wont help his insurance

If I were in your position I'd either do one of two things:

Keep the 1.6 if your really happy with it and feel attached to it and if you can afford it pay the insurance for another year.
or
Sell it and get your self a cheap 1L something, run it for a year to get your no claims up and put the money you have saved into a nice GTi.

Prob no point in changing to a 1.3, as has been said, insurance wont be that much cheaper.

Stick with you Golf - anything else you buy is going to have a big ole list of jobs that need to be done on it.

Sheesh, don't go thinking HIC are the be all and end all just because they'll insure young drivers on old cars and cover modifications.  Their cover ain't all that.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
