Turbo
« on: 17 October 2008, 16:50 »
Following a recent investigation into VAGCOM, I discovered turbo boost is at max up until 3000 rpm. It doesn't say what happens after 3000 rpm, but one can only assume that nothing happens after, as precisely nothing happens apart from limp acceleration, leading me to beleive that the 1.8 GTi Turbo should have infact been supplied with a 12 speed gear box to keep us under 3000 rpm, thus ensuring a more proper acceleration performance.

Is that correct that the turbo doesn't do anything after 3000 rpm?

Yeah, that appears to be the case. I get alot of torque, power pulling away but after 3000 rpm, there's not much to write home about.

turbo starts spooling at around 2200rpm (maybe more or less) then gets into its stride about 3-3500rpm and is pretty much done by 5-5500rpm

No fault has come up on the dash. I do remember someone else on here saying theirs is the same, it could just be that I personally don't think it's that fast.

Otherwise, how do I check for boost leaks?

Sounds like the car's detected a fault & gone into limp mode.  Have you plugged it into VAGCOM yet?

Well it's not really in limp mode, it still pulls away well, jut I feel more should be happening after 3000rpm, there's not really that pinned back in your seat feeling. I can still hear the turbo whistling away. I haven't plugged it in, need to get some form of vagcom.

get an ebay cheapo lead or see if anyone in your area has VAGCOM and see if you can log MAF and Intake Pressure

you should then check to see if you're reaching what the ECU is requesting - if you're not then you can start tracing the problem
