MK1 cab gear linkage
« on: 24 May 2004, 07:09 »
Alright chaps/ladies,
I'm finally getting down to rectifying the small problems on my new cabrio one of which is a "chinking" sound when i change gear. I have located the problem, there seems to be a lot of play in the linkage (when looking in the engine bay). Its the vertical shaft that runs through the bracket. Should there be a bush here or is it a case of tightening something up?
The second problem i have is excess play in the steering column (which results in a knocking). I have been told that this can be adjusted on the rack itself, is this true??
Cheers in advance
Tom

If you've got allot of play in the gear linkages (which is a very common fault) then it?s worth buying the linkage kit from German and Swedish which replaces all the bushes and connections.  A little time consuming but relatively easy to do.  I had similar symptoms and was rectified by the above.  As far as play in your rack goes, yes there is adjustment but it's worth taking it to a garage for a second opinion because even if it can be adjusted u'll need your wheel alignment sorted.  ;)
