Handbrake Squeak
« on: 15 October 2008, 18:04 »
Just noticed this for the past week, since I last detailed the car, in fact.

When I pull up the handbrake, it squeaks/moans a little (bit like that Alice out of Popeye, Olive's friend).

Any idea why? And how to stop it?

....

Don't worry - You can admit it to us that you fancy that Alice out of Popeye, Olive's friend  - We'll understand.

Do you press the button as you lift up the handbrake?

I think so. So automatic, I just don't think about it. Surely you'd hear the ratchet mechanism if you didn't?

....Someone told me (my VW mechanic IIRC) that it's better not to rattle up the ratchet mechanism and so I always depress the end button each time. In that silence I wondered if you still heard Alice squeal with delight?

I was taught the opposite of that red you should always let it ratchet up so you can hear the sound of how firmly you have put it on i thought the button was solely for release.  :undecided:

Double checked last night.

I push the button in to raise and lower the lever. The "squeak" happens near the top of the lever raising.
