Indicator stalk problems
« on: 13 October 2008, 21:02 »
Hi guys
Noticed today that I cannot pull the indicator stalk back to flash my lights or engage full beam when the steering wheel is straight. If I try it fouls on the back of the steering wheel spokes, so I have to turn the wheel about 45 degrees to the open part which allows it to pull back far enough to engage it.
Ive also noticed a clicking sound from the dash (like clicking relays, definitely from the dash area) when the wheel turns left over the stalk. The stalk doesn't look bent and its the standard steering wheel.
Anybody have any ideas?
Cheers

If you've got the required socket, it takes five minutes to whip off the wheel and have a look at the stalks. Maybe the indicator stalk has pulled out slightly? Or maybe the spring mechanism has gone slack.

Yeah I got the tools to get the wheel off, so ill take a look in my break tomorrow.
Do you know if there are any differences in the specs of the stalks from different years that could cause a poor fitment. My car by the way is a D plate 16v GTI.
Cheers

the early ones have spindly stalks, and swapped to chunky ones later on, the fitment to the column and plugs is the same (up to 1990 anway) but i think the stalk surround trim is a bit different.  dont thik it would cause this problem though?
