Engine playing up 2nite :-(
« on: 12 October 2008, 19:53 »
was driving home tonight and a few times when i put the foot down the engine was a bit hesitant/stuttery when under boost, was fine when below 2500 rpm. Any ideas what this could be? was an intermittant fault, only done it a couple of times, happened once before last month.
Any ideas??

thought it may have been the maf but unsure if this would only cause a problem at certain engine speeds

boost leak  :undecided:

your turbo doesn't come on song until approx 3000rpm

Think it could be the oem dump valve playing up? didnt think it could have been a boost leak as it only done it for a few minutes then was fine again

common misconception - boost leaks are notorious for being able to diagnose

it all depends on throttle position etc - you may find at half throttle everything is fine simply because the pipes aren't under full pressure and therefore not expanding, exposing the slipt and allowing boost to escape

you got access to VAG COM?? you can measure intake pressure with that

Na aint got vag com sadly and havent got the spare 200 quid to buy it. wish i did have it. Think a boost leak is the likely culprit then? or is there a chance it could be the dump valve or maf? Not getting any warning lights showing up at all

without hooking it up its hard to be sure  :undecided:

i suggested boost leak as it was based on your description

could be anything - MAF, DV, coil packs

its a process of elimantion unfortanately - cheapest is to poke your head around the engine bay and look for any obvious signs of cracked / split pipes and go from there

£200
You can get an ISO 3rd party lead from ebay for £15, then down load the shareware software from rosstech.  then at a later date you can upgrade to the full software version for around 90euros.
