gear box linkage i think

help please

just left the shops and the car is stuck in 4th i think i'm not sure as the gear lever now just wafts about i think its the linkage if so is it much of a job how much is it likely to cost?

You've got a 16v right?  If you look in the engine bay, on top of the gearbox is where you'll find your linkage.  If it's gone completely, you should be able to spot where it's gone wrong.  There are 2 cables attached.  You'll need to figure out if it's the cables, the linkage on the box, the stick assembly or the gearbox itself.

thanks for that matey, any ideas on how much of a job it might be and how much to get it mended

managed to find a torch and have been able to see the problem it is the linkage from the gear stick to the gear box

at the end of the cable there is a very rusty lookin clasp that has come loose from the rubber mount on the gear box

what i need to know now is do i have to replace the whole cable or is there an alternative

ive managed to bodge the clasp at the end of the cable with some re-inforced tape, it feels really sloppy so i will have to change the clasp at the end of the cable any body know what its called or where i can get 1 from

ive asked around a few people and they've said i need a new cable so ive been and got the kit now all i need is some help fitting the bloody thing!!!!

Probably do need a new cable,  means taking the centre section exhaust off, then the heat sheild and it drops out with just 3 bolts.  need a ramp really but its easy once the exhaust is out the way.

yeah i got a new cable and found out that i need to take the center bit of the exhaust off, what an absolute night mare ive had

i broke the plastic clip that the other cable attaches too, the bit you have to lift up to get the cable off, so i'm still stuck with out my car till i go back up the scrappy tommorow

if anybody knows the plastic bit i'm on about can they let me know how to change it as ive had a look just before it got dark but couldn't work it out my self

all done and better than before the clip i broke was just a straight swap £5quid from the scrappy managed to get the bracket that it slides into as well, as on mine another bit of plastic was missing, turns out that the missing bit was why i was struggling with first gear, now no problems at all

drives like a dream now, no struggling with first gear anymore hooray

the linkage kit i got was out of a passat too and is a better fit than the old 1 has i had a pool ball gear knob that wouldn't tighten right up but now it does also the gator was about 2 inches short of the gear knob but now it fits nice
