The dash doesn't need to come out. Tools required screwdrivers, pliers. Give it a go you will save a fortune and have the confidence to tackle something in the future. You will also get a nice warm feeling at not paying a garage to do it.... go on what have you to loose.

No one will take offence dude!!! But I can see your worried about the money??? Honestly so long as you are careful and methodical there is no thing you can break or damage!! If you weere closer i would come an give you a hand! You never know this time next year you could have the thing in bits loving it!! as stated above you dont have to take the dash out, But it is easier.... I had to change a few other bits n all!! Good luck dude!!

TBH, I'm a novice too and I'd give that a go. You just can't keep putting yourself down and saying "No I can't do that it looks too hard". You own an old car, if you'd like to spend the £200 - £300 on something else, then DIY the heater matrix. Take your time, don't panic.

Then charge Danny £201 for taking up space on your drive

you dont have to take the dash out to swap the heater matrix, but it is easier if you do!  and its easier to take off the entire airbox in 1 piece rather than mess about splitting the centre box from the blower housing, those clips are a mare.  Only 2 more nuts on the firewall plus a colple of fixings under the dash and the whole thing comes off.  I've done it both ways!

Check that it's not the inlet valve at the bulkhead not letting enough water through. I've just changed my matrix ( 8hrs upside down - to find that it made no diff whatsoever)
Changed the inlet valve and wahey !!!
