Heater matrix...how much?
« on: 09 October 2008, 17:51 »
Hi all, blimey it's been ages since I was last on here!

My heater is broken  and needs a new matrix. Now I know from what I've read this is a pig of a job but can anyone tell me roughly how much the garage should be charging me to supply and fit it? I'm guessing about £200 - £300? As in £50 for the part plus about four hours work at say £50 p/h?

I just don't wanna get completley ripped off, I'm no mechanic unfortunately.

Cheers.

Not sure if these are any good ive had stuff before from these people and have had no problems  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK2-MK3-GTI-HEATER-MATRIX-C39_W0QQitemZ200257702814QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200257702814&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.
You need to take it to a vw specialist idealy, where abouts are you?. £200-300 sounds rather expensive to me

Crikey thats cheap! Nice one, I'll still have to pay to get it installed though, and thats the expensive bit. I asked the guy in a local independent VW/Audi specialist and he said probably about 4 hours work (at £50 hourly rate) I'm near Bristol by the way.

I just changed the matrix, it cost £15 from GSF. There is a guide on here how to do it. It took 2hours and was quite easy.

You say it's not hard but I really dont have a clue when it comes to this kind of stuff! Would a COMPLETE NOVICE (and I mean novice!) be able to do it? Honestly? To give you an idea my knowledge stretches as far as changing the wheel and thats about it.

Well I've just had a quick read through of that and I'm sorry to say....it scares me! That doesn't look or sound like the job for a novice! Hands up who reckons I should have a go myself??? And hands up who thinks I'm gona have to bite the bullet and pay someone else??? (How much roughly should I pay by the way?)

I have had my dash out about four or five times... Pretty easy really!!! Its reall not hard mate it just looks a lot of work!!But think of what you could spend that £200-£300 on!!! You only sit around drinking beer while the car was in the garage... Or maybe thats just me!!

I hear you, the trouble is, and don't take offence here guys, but most of, if not everyone on here is into their fixing, tuning and modding where as little old me just loves to drive and admire my GTI, just the way it is.....but then of course I'm knackered when anything breaks! I guess this seems like an easy job when you've removed your dash like 5 times, but I doubt I have the tools for the job even if I wanted to do it myself. But then 200-300 quid what with the credit crunch n all..... uuuuuurrrrrrgggghhhhhhh....
