If your worried about fuel economy why consider a V6? How about a decent Mk4 1.8T with a modest remap... Faster than the 4 Motion except for in the wet, and 40mpg if you take it steady. Cheaper to service and loads of spares on ebay. Everyone's a winner.
As for LPG... I would have to be doing a serious amount of miles before I could be arsed with an LPG conversion.

Reason I'm considering the V6 with LPG is the bottom's falling out of the market for quick cars with big engines so for about the same money as a TDi 150 I could be looking at the V6 with LPG conversion done. However, the TDI is rather nice...
