Engine comparisons? Vw Tdi engines
« on: 01 October 2008, 13:46 »
I've seen something round here somewhere I'm sure...

We're considering another VAG when we replace our Megane, so am looking to make sure I get the one with the best engine (I only got the 16v by accident )

I'm sure I saw somewhere a comparison of the different engine types?  Anyone give me a clue on what to search for or some pointers?

We're mostly looking at TDI's now, possibly Passat's.  How tuneable is the 130bhp one, or is it worth getting a golf 150bhp and mapping that?

depends what year of manufacture you're after, the ones to go for are the PD engines.. but vw have switched back to the commonrail type diesels now.

04 or 05 Passat should see you right.

We've got a 4Motion TDI 130 and it's a truly great car.

Avoid the new shape Passats - they're just bloated Golfs and have stupid stuff like an electronic parking brake (which apparently goes faulty a lot).  The B5.5 has a longitudinal engine and is based on the Audi A6, so is built like a bank vault.

The 4Motion also handles pretty well for a big ole barge.  This was us a couple of weekends ago:

130 PD motor will chip up to 150-170bhp easily.  I've not got ours done yet though - 130bhp and 40MPG is good enough for a daily for me.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Well we're looking at around the £3k mark, which looks to be c.2002 money?  For that kind of price, there seem to be lots of 110's around, not so many 130's, and I've not seen any 4motions yet - lol.  When did the 4motion start?

S1 RST - one of my favs of all time, but the missus she say no, looks like a chav car   I might just roll up in one with a 4" tailpipe one day

She's also not so keen on the Passat idea now, and wants a Golf TDI.  They do seem more expensive, and a decent 150bhp one is like hens teeth!
