Trying to find out the roots of my engine
« on: 26 September 2008, 09:24 »
Hi all,

I recently purchased a VW Scirocco GT2 (1992) which has had a 1.8 Gti 16v conversion...

Unfortunately the guy that sold it to me had no service history for the engine itself and he and his brother (who carried out the work) told me 2 different things as to where the engine came from.

The owner said it was from a mark 2 gti ..
His brother who fitted it said it was from a mark 1 cabriolet gti.

I was wondering if there was any way to tell which car it was actually from and to find out roughly how much mileage it had done .. ?

Cheers

I looked long and hard to find my perfect Rocco (Ive been in love with them since I was about 13 but couldnt afford the insurance on one till now!)

Saw this beaut with the injected engine, MFA, probably the only scirocco with power steering and just had to have it

Hello and welcome.

Cheers wayned

I had a feeling that was the case but I also saw that apparently a 16v Gti Mark 1 Cab was made elsewhere?

Is it possible that my engine was originally from a mk2 then transplanted to a mk 1 cabby and is now in my car?

If so is there any way to tell or to guage the true mileage?

Many thanks guys

You're never going to be able to suss out the mileage or the origins of your engine without all the paperwork from the cars it was removed from. If it doesnt smoke, rattle, boil or otherwise give you grief then just keep it well maintained and enjoy it.
