MKII GTi 8v fuel pump replacement
« on: 25 September 2008, 17:17 »
Hello folks, I've had some problems with my car dieing when it reaches temperature and I've finally had it diagnosed as a faulty fuel pump. He's told me there's 2 fuel pumps and this is the one in the tank. A mechanic I know has said there's 2 types, 1 that you need to drop the tamk out to do it and 1 that has got an inspection hatch.

Anyone know which one my car is and if so how much I'd be looking at for replacement including labour?

It's a 1991 J plate MKII GTi 8v 5 door.

Thanks hopefully...

The MK2 lift pump is accessible after taking out a metal disc under the boot carpet, so easy to replace.  Also easy to diagnose if it faulty, pull the electrical plug off the main pump under the car and turn the key 1 click, if you dont hear the lift pump prime its dead or has a dodgy wiring connection :)

no the lift pump is submerged in the fuel tank, the under car pump is bolted to the bottom of the car and is fed by the lift pump :)

i changed my lift pump in about 1/2 an hour (with a hammer and a large block of wood) and my fuel pump in about 45mins-1hr if that helps give as estimate on labour.

And i am pretty slow

oh have to add the early pre-90 lift pumps had a 3 pin plug, since yours is post 90 you need one with a 4 pin plug :)

no its totally duifferent, mk3 uses a single pump inside the tank and does away with the under car one!
