thats just an article about some videotape  i thought you had some stats, also that was like 2005-2006, you clearly stated that one of the biggest killers in young girls in the UK is their boyfriends driving? do you have any proof......other than an article written nearly 2 years ago about a video tape

....I don't have any direct stats at hand but I'm confident you'll find that all the insurance companies will confirm that there are more road deaths and serious injuries caused by young male drivers than any other group. Traffic Police and Emergency Services would doubtless also confirm this. Of course elderly drivers are a higher risk too.

It's such a problem that some Forces have arranged very realistic recreations of nasty accidents and invited young drivers to be present. When you are young you tend to think you are both invincible and immortal! The term "boy-racer" isn't for no reason.

I felt so sorry for a person yesterday stopped on the M1 nr Watford by the nasty rozzers. It was a black GTI 08 plate. A colleague passed it and thought it was me - thankfully not.

Hopefully they had only stopped them to say what a great car it was!

Anyone want to own up to it?

....Why do you describe the Police as "nasty"? The GTI driver had obviously done something he/she shouldn't have done, would be a more likely assumption.

I agree with RR. You break speed limits at your own risk. And when you've done it you do not whine about how bad coppers are. You are the only one to blame, so be a man about it. I may have lost my license day before yesterday, but I took the risks knowingly.

Please tell me we are not going into this debate again??

Let me throw some spanners here. I have a friend who is 18 years old. His dad used to drive a Gold Opel Astra GTC. Daddy needed to go overseas. The son was left behind and told the kid he could drive the Opel.

A few days into driving the Opel school and back (and I must admit considering the power he has he is extremely responsible and never I repeat never speeds hence why daddy trusted him with the car) he came in saying he had been stopped three times in two days. Told to get out the car and stand against the boot while the traffic officer checked his drivers.

In one week he came and told he had been stopped over 4 times in the Astra. Doing absolutely nothing illegal. He has never been fined and will never be. Red Robin. It seems you are suggesting that just because you are younger (i.e Joes age) in a nice car you should be stopped over and over again?

I think not. Thats very unfair.

I have to agree with Joe. If they want to stop you then go for it. When you are stopped continuosly and treated like dirt then I think it is fair to get a negetive opinion of the traffic cops.

Robin is in 'Dad' mode.

Quite right when you consider that one of the biggest killers of teenage girls in Britain was their boyfriends’ bad driving.

Sorry Egbert but what utter rubbish is this? What about all the girls that:

1. Are stuck on tik, ecstacy and weed which ends up killing them?
2. Drown
3. Are murdered and raped?

I checked the statistics and yes motor vehicle accidents are 39% to blame for death of teens (15 to 19 years old). To claim that those 40% of the deaths were caused by bad driving on behalf of the boyfriend is your opinion which bears no resemblence to the truth. Teenage girls also drive... Teenage girls also get driven over by teenage female drivers. Please make sure you have proof before you make statements containing predujice and bias like that.

Red Robin. I understand that you have a vast experience of life. But please.
I have grandparents. Four sets of them to be exact. And to drive with them is terrifying. Yet driving with my mate in his Opel. My Mate in his Toyota, my mate in his Merc S Class and my other mate inhis MK2 GTI I do not feel unsafe at all. Older people need to get out of the mindset that teenagers/boy racers cannot drive. We have access to far more electronics and our school systems and what we are educated on has changed vastly. We are different to the teenagers of 20 years ago. My school has had ten years without a single road accident that claimed a death.

Old people are more prone to thinking they are better drivers and I honestly consider older people to be the boy racers. Not us. Why? BEcause we have all played Grand Turismo (Just an example) and all know that if you come around that corner at 120 miles per hour you will crash and die. Whereas older people think because they have been driving for over 50 years they are invincible.

If you have proof that most accidents are caused by teenagers then I will gladly shake hands. If Egbert can prove that boys kill girls in cars. Then fairplay- well done. But as far as I am concerned this topic is much like the Open fog grills topic you and TT have been going on about. Its all about your opinion and when opinion is thrown around without proof then I dont see the point in even expressing it.

In my opinion. If you drive like a fool. You get killed. If you drive like a maniac. You get fined. Irrespective of how old you are or what you are driving.

Joe, I thought that was going to happen to me, see a young lad in a tidy car but since getting the MK5 (5 months ago) I am yet to get pulled. I got pulled over more times in my POS Clio than the GTI. Im clearly a good boy ;)

As there was a bit of a discussion about stats that RR was quoting, I was given a study report last week at our IAM comittee meeting about research the IAM Trust has done into young drivers. If you want to find out accurate figures or you just have trouble sleeping you can download it from http://www.iam.org.uk/OneStopCMS/Core/TemplateHandler.aspx?NRMODE=Published&NRNODEGUID={BDDB7C16-34E8-4461-8CA6-9E772ECF34F4}&NRORIGINALURL=%2fmotoringtrust%2f&NRCACHEHINT=NoModifyGuest  :nerd:

On the subject of being stopped by the Police I have as a second car a 1989 BMW E30 325i which I use when I feel the need to travel sideways. I've been blatently followed by the police as they think 'Aha, old BMW, must be dodgy' Never (touch wood) been stopped yet though. I always think they must be really dissapointed when they run the plate and it's all legit! I say this bearing in mind my father was a policeman for 30 years (including traffic) and I have a lot to do with them through the IAM.

Mike - Please understand that I was only generalising - Not ALL teenagers/young people are poor drivers etc - You usually have to generalise in order to discuss something. I will say that, regardless of age, experience of driving contributes a lot imo. You learn from experience and it's mixed with natural skill, spacial awareness, planning, etc etc, in other words what's called Roadcraft.

The perception that some older people have about young drivers isn't helped by those younger drivers who do drive dangerously and isn't it an indisputable fact that there are plenty? This is also why some posts (not all) in the "Cars you've beaten in your GTI" give others such a bad image of this community. I have to question the maturity of those who run this site if they post comments that either encourage it or which tend to make themselves sound cool by such attitudes.

If you are on the road just to impress your mates, your girlfriend, or just to brag - I, for one, have no time for it and will spend far less time on this site, though with regret.

I'm just expressing my opinions.

Wow i started something here!

The nasty rozzers comment was not really that i think they are nasty but only that they stopped one of our GTI friends. I think most of the police are good guys and have a pretty thankless job. If he/she was doing over the limit then yes, he deserves it really and yes, speed causes accidents and i don't condone it at all. Having said that do we all stick to the speed limits everywhere?

I drive very sensibly around towns, I don't use my mobile, I haven't had points on my license for over 12 years (that is tempting fate!), but....... if the motorway or dual carriageway is clear I do put my foot down. That is why we have the GTI.

Didn't mean to upset any GTI owning policemen or start a row over driving styles!
Keep away from the bad people
