oil pressure!!
« on: 24 September 2008, 21:59 »
hi i bought an 89 mk2 16v a while back its had a lot of money spent on it in the past:

engine block bored and honed to a 2L with 82.5mm (oversized) pistons.
92.8mm crankshaft
the head was gas flowed and using schrick 268 cams
k star ks3-01    ???? any ideas?
it had oil gallery core plugs
main bearing shells
quaiffe LSD
and an oil pump with 36mm gears

this was all about 9 years and 40k ago with a recipt for nearly 5k
Last year the oil pump and machine shaft were replaced again im guessing with standard items.

i've changed the oil and filter and cleaned the pick up pipe and gauze but am still getting very little oil pressure especially when up to temperature.
My next step i guess is to replace the oil pump again? can i slap a standard one in or do i have to go the full shabang and get one with 36mm gears? whats so special about these 36mm gears?

Has anybody got any clues as to what else this problem could be?    thanks!!

just seen some info on here:  http://www.autotech.com/prod_engine_oilsys.htm
which says that if a 1.8 is converted to a 2L then the 2L uses the larger 36mm gears so im praying that its got a 1.8 pump in it!

does this mean that a mk3 2L 16v pump will go in a mk2 block?

took my oil pump off this morning and it has got 36mm gears  it looks ok and as it was changed like 12 months ago i guess it probably is ok, not sure what else to try really apart from thicker oil!

has anybody got a decent 16v engine they wanna sell?

how much pressure dose it have,     probaly worth poping a main cap to have a look at the shells to see if good or not
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
