gearbox oil in mk3 8v gti
« on: 24 September 2008, 14:59 »
Hi,

Done a search regarding this but have the following Q's;

Anyone have any pics of where and how to do this on a mk3 8v?

Apparently the fill plug is on the side of the gearbox, if this is the case won't it just piss everywhere when trying to fill the bugger up?

Exactly where abouts is the fill and drain plug? I have no haynes manual.

cheers,

kells

fill plug is in 1 of 2 places, on the side of the bell housing area, (sort of behind the wheel) really faffy, oil dont come out of it, but putting oil in usually results in spillage as u have to squirt it in through a tube which u usually get with the oil (unless u use mobil like me!!) when the fresh oil starts to trickle out on its own theirs enough in...

to check the level u put your finger in and if the oil comes up to your finger its ok

its faffy to do as the car has to be level and thats hard as the job is best done with the car jacked up!!

theirs a drain plug on the underside of the box...

just get some decent quality transmission/gearbox oil from halfords, be about a tenner or so :)

not so much a b!tch to do, just a bit faffy, cant remember off my head what the capacity of oil is for the box, ill have to check later unless someone else can remember in the meantime..

The capacity on the 16v is 2.2l - prob not the same on the 8v, but gives you a rough idea.  Halfrauds was shocking for gear oil prices, something like a tenner for a litre.  An autofactor was £10 for 5l!!

To answer why it doesn't p!ss out everywhere..  The fill plug is set at the height on the side of the box which is relative to the capacity of the oil.  It doesn't need to be full of oil, it's prob about half full, enough to cover all the gears.

Hi Guys,

Had conflicting info about where to fill the gearbox up from.

Basically just been down to VW on Pride Park in Derby and the guy in parts rang up to the garage to ask where to put it in - the garage said just pull the plug at the top of the gearbox and pour it in there??????? I had a look and there is a pull plug on the top of the engine (8valve AGG, R plate, 1997)

However I'm being told to  undo the hex screw at the side and put it in there, which haynes also state.

I'm totally confused.com

HELP.

cheers
