My first car was a 1.1 fiesta from my dad, But i sold it before i got a licence for my 1.6 Mk2 Golf.

There worth it but, like all cars they cost a lot, By all means DONT buy a 1.3, There slow and not worth it ;)

Good luck with your test, hope it all goes well.

As for the car,  can i listen to the insurance company you ring as they laugh and but the phone down.
TBH if your gonna get a mk2 you have got to get a 1.6+ or its not worth it. The fact that a lot of these cars cost less than ?500 is good. BUT you will be paying ?2000+ to insure the thing. This is really not worth the hastle.

What you need to do is get a small fun car that if you like can be modified really well to give ok performace but is cheap to insure. I have seen the future and its MINI shaped. As a first car these are SOOOO much fun. With ?120 you can fit the stage 1 kit which turn the engine from a sack of sh1t to a car that is responsive and fun to drive. The mini handles like nothing else on the road.

As you may have quessed a mini was one of my first cars, actual first was a polo then uno then the mini. Mini are in a low insurance group so are cheap to insure. Loads of mods can be done on them and there are loads of them for sale. Just make sure the body work is good.

When ringing for insurance spend a good 4/5 hours calling different companies, If you do go GOLF then get a golf mag and ring the companies in there and the ones in yellow pages also www.confused.com <- do this now with golf then mini and see the difference.

I really would consider a small cheap car for at least a year until you have a 1 years no claims, Also if you do want to get a fast car first then do all the pass plus and extra course that lower insurance.

Good luck

Let us know what you choose *cough* mini *cough then golf

mate id advise you to get a small engine car like a 1.3 or below just to get your no claims bonus for one year then buy a cool car. I had a peugeot 309 GLX 1.3 for my first car and it was OK for a year now that im 18 i got a mk2 GTI 8v for ?150 with my insurance costing ?1120 from elephant.co.uk and im thinking about keeping this one for a couple of years. Ive driven an RS turbo which i could have had insurance for ?1500, that car had 160bhp! but it doesnt compare to my golf, + golfs are way more solid and there are way more mods.

For a first car you really wanna pay less than ?1000 for insurance, i really think a mini is the way to go.

i'm gonna big up the 1.3  ;D. a few mods to the chassis ( 40-60 mm lowering kit, front anti roll bar to start) and you'll be well away. it's a great feeling watching crappy xr3i struggle past you only for you to nip round a roundabout a 65mph while he slides all over the road. there's no letting up. you point the thing where you want to go and that's where it will go. drivers and gtis are nice but get some valuable experience in a lesser car first.

and don't get me started on the fule bills ;D

id vote on the Mini too, they're are fun and cheap to run - but not to buy.  If your paying out some of the prices that Mini's ask, you'd probably be better off looking at Beetles, no one cares if they're slow, they're still class.

if your after somthing a bit more modern, then the Polo in the coupe form is quite a smart little motor, good build but lighter than the Golfs, so the 1.3 makes a decent car.
