VR6 OIL Temp Problem
« on: 18 September 2008, 21:47 »
Hi All,

Just got myself a 1996 VR6 Highline and I have had this problem where the cars oil temp keeps on climbing under normal driving, have seen it go as high as 114 before i freewheeled and let it come back down,

I have checked the car out with Vag-Com and no faults found i only have the freebie one off ross tech 409.1

Have changed the oil and filter, the thermostat and housing to the awesome low temp thermostat, fitted a new aux water pump as the old one was knackered. Flushed the system so does not appear to be any blockage as i ran the hose through the radiator and it seemed to run freely. Have refilled the system with 3.5ltrs of G12 and water.

Left the car to run up to temp with cap off the expansion bottle and then took it for a run. When i boot it i let it go upto 112 then if you let it free wheel for only a short distance the oil temp drops down quickly. Let it go back to 102 then drove at 60mph and it rose again to 104-106 so not sure why its cooling so quickly when you let it free wheel. Also when i got back to the house i let it idle and it sat at 100 and no fans running which is a first.

When i stop after the work run the car is sitting around 106 and fans and axillary pump running for about 10mins.

At all times the coolant has never gone above 90. I know that the oil temp is still not extremely high but its much higher than my old cars, and also i don't like how it climbs so quickly when you boot it!

Anyone had any issues like this in the past any ideas what could be the cause then??

Last one is that once up to temp the car is very spluttery when pulling away from junctions at low speeds. Its fine when its cold only when at temp it starts this? Car has sone 113K miles and seems to pull well.

Cheers

that temp sounds about normal to me... if it was 130+ id have a think about it, some track going cars hit 145ish hence the uprated oil coolers etc...

could it be a wairing fault - cables getting warm (running close to hot component giving a resistance change in the cable)

not sure what my vr conversion gets to - off he goes for aome country road driving...

id only worry if at the time of high oil temp i also had a low oil pressure warning..
