Mk2 gearbox into mk3
« on: 18 September 2008, 18:36 »
Hi, will a mk2 8v gearbox fit a 93 mk3 8v? Im on a tight budget due to second kiddie on the way and read that mk2 gearbox will fit but what one 8v or 16v? Will i have to change the clutch or anything else? only doing this as i can get mk2 box alot cheaper than a mk3. Cheers for any help Lee

Yes you can mate.. ive just had a mk2 1.8 gti 8v box on my mk2 2.0 gti 8v.

However i did need a complete new clutch kit in order for it to fit, so if your on a budget i wouldnt really recommend it.

Where you located? only asking because the place that i got my gearbox from is a vw breakers in derby, they specialise in mk1, 2 and 3. Should be able to pick up a mk3 box for around £100 there

Im in dorset whats the breakers called? and what do you mean by clutch kit? call me stupid but do you mean new clutch,if so what one mk2 or 3 or just the plate?. I found a mk3 box for £100 and a mk2 for £40 out of a 75000 miles car,so thinking taking the cheapest route :undecided: but not sure what is best
Thanks for the help Lee

Central Motors Salvage VW
Endland Industrial Estate, Parcel Terrace, Derby, Derbyshire DE1 1LY
Tel: 01332 371819

theres the details for the breakers and the do deliver because i had mine deliverd for an extra £30 or sumit like that.

Well basically i had a complete new clutch for the 1.8 box.. this cost £80, its nothing special and its what the guy that fitted the box for me got, so i have no idea where to get it from or what make it is.

Who would be fitting it for you? unless youve gotta mate doing it for beer tokens or you can do it yourself then itd probs be best to pay 100 for the mk3 box, then you no it will defo fit with the same clutch and that. I dont no that much but from when mine was done i no the reason that the 1.8 box dont fit straight on is because of a push rod or something along those lineS!

Sorry i couldnt be of more help fella hope you get it sorted
