What's different on a VR6 to a 16v GTI??
« on: 17 September 2008, 22:12 »
Mechanically I mean?  They share the same gearbox, obviously a different engine, but what else is there?  Suspension the same?  Wheel sizes the same?  Brakes the same?

I thought about searching, but couldn't think where would have a comparison of the 16v against the VR6   I love the 16v so much, I'm thinking of tempting the wife to get a VR6, or sell the valver to get a VR6, but don't want to start with big expenses..

not sure if brakes are the same... think they are slightly bigger on the VR

also re body work... the VR doesn't have the arch trim and also has a deeper front splitter

vr6 upto 93 used the normal gti 280mm discs and then after then they used the 288mm discs (like the gti had from 95).. oh and the front deep spoiler was only fitted up until 94 too, and the arches were standard upto 94 then a factory option for 95 and deleted for 96 onwards (when they also got fully coloured bumpers)

oh yeah the vr6 highline was the fully specced up car with nice leather, air cond and special interior trimmings and badges... the best of all the mk3's

Ah, that was another question - so highline just means high spec, rather than high roofline or summit

Anyone gone from gti to vr6, or had any really expensive issues with VR6 you don't get on gti?

oh i forgot the highline came in some special colours too.....I do know the vr engine really does need proper servicing as I've heard of cam, head trouble and these are expensive to fix!! but as with the 16v.. these can last 200-300'000 miles without a rebuild.. shame they both use a box that isnt quite as strong!!

OK, ran the VR6 idea past the wife.  Don't think she's going for 2 MK3's!!  My bro-in-law is interested in the valver though, so I think I might sell it on and get a highline..

Insurance on the golf atm is £250 tpf&t for the year.  Can't be a lot different to a VR6 surely?  Both the 16v and VR6 are group 16?
