hello and welcome to the forum......sounds like an interesting project. but if you really want vr6 beating power your best bet is to get a later 130/150 pd seat/golf engine and fit that as the mk3 1.9tdi is a very very different (and not really tunebale) engine and you'll be lucky to get 130bhp with all them mods!! (max tdi mk3 power is 90bhp!) yet the later engine can give 200+ bhp easy

i agree it will  be difficult. ive had 2 mk4s and a leon tdi - one of the golfs was an allard tuned with the full works that that was 220bhp. the thing is a new clutch is 400 plus fly wheel - then the vnt always gets naffed costing anotther 300 at least. the mk3s are much cheaper to maintain and i have seen some tdis with serious power.

hello and welcome!

i remeber reading sumwhere that sumone had a mk3 tdi with original engine running just over 200 bhp proven by various rolling roads round the contry but that was serious mods for ex: hybrid turbo, injectors, nitrous, cams, pistons etc so you would deffo need to get a bigger wallet but it can be done, ive your lucky with the bay you might just squeeze it in you budget.

would love to see this project unfold! gd luck matey

Hey People - I think it would be nice if I show you how ive got on 6 months later, so here goes - how things are planned and how they turn out eh?

Plan was - a 200 bhp tdi for under 2k?

as I was searching for a tdi I found an LPG 16v Gti so I thaught what the heck why not?

Mods so far

VR6 leathers in cream including dash - what a nightmare that was - and cream carpets what a headache.
white alloys 16s
coilovers
joey mod on the lights by myself
mdf parcel shelf - amp and speakers all around

now i have the engine - firstly i want to get the original 150 horses back that it came with - after that ill think about mods - im a bit limited really as i dont want to mess the lpg running up. I put in 20 quid a week and get all over the place - 17 quid full tank.

and here is a sneak p of what im working on -need to get the bonnet resprayed - might even sand it and let it rust for the rat look  - see if you can spot any differnece on the headlights

i did come accross a mk3 tdi and dragon green one tuned by redi tuning to 220 bhp - he wanted 2k for it but there was oil all over the engine block and it was th e older 1z engine  - hybrid turbo - fmic - stronger and bigger diesel pump and bigger injectors - and he told me that some times you turn it on and it runs like a 90hp standard tdi as the ecu loses the map? you have to switch it off then on again, so i decided against buying that , it was an ex track car so would have been well thrashed
