keeping the cab which brakes
« on: 15 September 2008, 12:48 »
hi all after a stint of being completly broke things are looking up so im gonna keep the car.
i am concerned though after driving modern cars including my scooby up till now .my current brakes arent all that good the front discs are about the size of a childs plate also is it worth changing rears to discs .
any advice on this would be appreciated cheers

Is it a Mk1 Cab ?
in which case it's well known that the brakes are pants.
You could always upgrade them to Mk2 GTI items. And changing the Rear drums to discs will improve matters though it will change the front/rear brake bias.

Search the MK1 section, they *should* have more than enough info there for you

Yeah you can upgrade to mk2, calipers etc, think im possibly sticking some toldeo brakes on mine if it all works out that way anyway - like Jay said, the mk1 section does hold more in depth threads...
also afaik, changing your drums to discs doesn't have that much of an effect on the breaking, more of a looks upgrade
also upgrade your servo and breaking also depends on what discs/pads you buy

Never thought I'd say this, but the woman is right  :lipsrsealed:

Rears don't give you any greater advantage when breaking and cost you more for nothing while trying to improve your breaking. Get some brand new drums so they look good, they're about £10 each for MK2 drums so about the same for MK1's I'd expect.

You will defo have to uprate your servo and MC when uprating the rest of your breaking setup.

from what I remember from a scirocco forum is that you can fit certain audi calipers to mk1 platform cars to let you fit 256mm brakes, but theyre pretty rare!

MC is the master cylinder.

I've seen Rubjonny talking about Vauxhall brakes on a mk1 before, not sure if he has them on his but probably worth a search
