What is low mileage?
« on: 14 September 2008, 23:58 »
I have a 1989 Golf 1.8 MK2, it has 137,000 miles. I really love my golf and want to keep it for a long time. How many miles should I expect the car to do?

Is it worth selling and getting a lower mileage golf, or should I just keep this one and spend money on improving etc.

Thanks for your opinions!

need a bit mroe info is it 1.8 driver, 1.8 8v gti, 16v gti etc? i say this as you can get drivers for a lot less miles and gti's tend to be used properly if you get my drift ! i'd be looking at bodywork if you're keeping it for a while, if thats sound mechanicals and engines are straight forward if yuo dont mind getting down and dirty! Good body work also means care has been taken to maintain it so this may also reflect the mechanicals.

16v gti's tend to be 120k - 150k average?

8v gtis vary every once in a while i see a low miler and high miler like 200k +

1.8 drivers 100-120k??

just rough guide

It is an 8V Golf GTI 89' mk2.

Do you think it is worth looking for a lower mileage golf (same model) if I want to keep it for a long time, or should I just keep my current golf (which I love) and spend some money on it making it real nice? Also the only color I really like is Helios Blue like my current one, are they rare?

It's got pretty good body, but has a small rust spot on bonnet. I am thinking of getting a new bonnet and replacing it! Do you know any good places that would have one in Helios Blue?

I have a helios blue metallic valver that has done 180k.
It runs great but mostly the body is in great condition.
I would rather work on an engine with a few more miles than get a bad shell.

130k is nothing, they go straight past 250k no probs. Just make sure you look after it, service regularly etc etc.
Even if the engine did go bang for what ever reason, the engines cheap enough so you can just replace it if the shell is in good condition.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

i have 113k on my 1.6, bought it with 105k and that is considered low/average milage. Under 100k is low milage on a mk2 though. As said before, up till 250k they pull like trains.

My 8v has done 72k and isn't in the greatest condition (needs a major polish, boredering on a respray to bring it back to red, no rust though) so i would go on condition rather than mileage, a well serviced engine is a must though.

well my driver is average (id say) at 125,000 whereas my GTI is at 194,000
the engine was abit rough on the GTI when i bought it but the rest was sound.
a new engine was £150 from a VAG breakers, so quite reasonable
just look at bodywork and the main structure like chassis and you shud be fine

MIne just approaching 180,000. Still pulls like a train and the bodyworks excellent too. If its got a decent shell then deffinatly stick with it as the engines are superb and will out live the body if looked after. If you can afford it maybe get a second car to do all your commuting and keep the golf for weekends?. Low mileage golf are getting rare now and you can expect to pay over 2k for a good one.

"Better the devil you know"

GTI's tend to be driven harder and depending on the driver, maybe from cold so you could never estimate how many miles you are going to cover in the future with the same engine. The previous owner on my valver had a brand new engine fitted due to a faulty oil pump on a 115k engine.

Anything can happen, but i agree that you should keep your car. 137k is relatively low, you probably know it inside out and every little thing thats wrong with it right? If you get a another one, you may find it is actually worse.

Good choice of colour
