Removing Fuel pump

hey peeps, :smiley:

I went down the scrappy today to get a fuel pump off another mk3 but i just could'nt get it out. My petrol guage won't go down below the red lines and was told by a garage that it's what's connected in the boot next to the spare wheel compartment. Is that the pump yeah?
I unscrewed the plastic lid and disconnected the two pipes and wire connection but then i got stuck on the plastic casing thats all the way round it :angry:. How can i get it out? does it matter if i break the plastic?

Help much appreciated  :smiley:

Having exactly the same problem at the moment!!!   I know on the volvo you literaly have to unscrew that thing using a soft mallet or something.  but its not moving on my golf and i dont wanna break it.

I would speak to len as he's recently replaced his...all though he broke something!!

Hi, i have managed to sort mine out now. 

First of all i would like to thank len very much as i did PM Him and he told me how to get the pump out,  its quite simple.

Once you have done the obvious and disconected the pipes and power conector, you can use a small bit of wood ( i used the handle of a small hammer)  Hit the right hand side of the large nut using a bit of wood and a hammer away from you and dont be affraid to HIT!  it will come undone with a few heafty wallops.   then you can pull the top part off and reach down into the tank where the pump sits,  grab it with your hand and twist to the left, its a bayonet type fitting and the pump will just lift out of the tank.  really is simple and easy once the nut is off,  took me 10 mins to swap mine over.   :smiley:

cheers for that buddy, but the large nut, meaning the big plastic one around it yeah? does it matter if you break it?
I am guessing your fuel gauge problem is fixed now?.....

I was swaping pumps for my conversion so didnt have a problem to fix,    and yes if the nut breaks it could be a problem but if you use a bit of wood i cant see it breaking easily, its tough plastic,  it does start moving after a few hits.
