I got mine back from stealers yesterday after its first service, wanted to charge £255 but reminded them i took out the 3yr service plan so payed nothing, they even forgot to charge me for fitting my new itg air filter which they said would charge £40.
Slightly off topic, maybe tt can help they did not recommed fitting the likes of itg,k&n as they are oil based and it can sucked into the engine and cause problems to the tune of £300, I said fit anyway so they did. any thoughts ?
All "foam" type air filters which use oil are a very bad idea - for all modern engines, petrol or diesel - which have a "Mass Air Flow" (MAF) sensor.
Most modern MAFs are based on the "hot wire" principle, whereby a voltage is applied across a very fine wire, which then heats up to a certain pre-determined temperature. When the engine is running, it "sucks" air into the combustion chambers. When this air passes over the hot wire, the airflow cools the wire. The greater the volume of air, or the greater the speed of the air over the hot wire = the greater cooling effect. The ECU monitors the voltage required to keep the wire at the correct temp, and adjusts the fuel delivery accordingly.
Now, this wire gets extremely hot - hot enough to burn you if you touch it. The problem with oiled air filters is that some of the oil will vapourise and form a mist, which will then get sucked past the MAF along with the air flow. Any oil which touches the hot wire will get "burned on" to the surface. Overtime, the wire will get a coating of carbon, and its efficiency will reduce, making the car run rough, and give poor fuel economy.
When the MAF wire gets covered, you can sometimes clean it with carb cleaner, though this isn't very effective, and usually means a new MAF, at around £80 to £160 a time - plus labour charges.
