GT TDI golf turbo problem
« on: 10 September 2008, 18:47 »
Dont know if this is in the right section but i have a gtg tdi mk4 golf. Now just the other day i have been having big probs which i reckon is the turbo. Now it started when i was on the m1 cruising at 80 mph, and all of a sudden the car kicked down to 60 in 5th gear. So pulled over to have a look ...... nothing. Anyway started off again and everything was fine, then 30 mins on motorway again and the same happened again. turned the car off then on, everything was fine but repeated the same process until i got home. Over 2 or 3 days of driving its worsened, and now there is no kick in it at all.
Now i have had these problems a year or 2 back and it was a hairline split in the pipe that runs from the turbo to the lntercooler. But this problem produced black smoke from the exhaust. But it is different this time, but cant find the problem.
just dont fancy paying £200+ like befor.
Please help any1

when your traveling at 80 when you put your foot down what does the car do? does it pick up very slow? not at all? or like normal? does it smoke all the time or not?

thanks

Hi christianduncan could I pick up this thread as I am having the same problem. The car will start fine, sitting about 80 the power will just drop and the turbo will die, but when I turn the car off and on again it is fine again for a while then dies again.

Ant idea?  Like the original poster there is no black smoke or noise?

Any help would be great, would like to know the craic before taking it to a mechanic!!

Plug it into vag-com (if you can)
Mine has done this a few times turned out to be a boost pipe on the intercooler had half come off, jack your car up and check all the pipes are nice and tight and not like this

ok im going to try that tomorrow and check all of my pipes.  i spoke to somebody the other day a awesome gti in irlam and they said to me that it sounds like mine is overboosting because when i turn the engine off and back on it will be ok.  what does this mean? and how can i fix it???

hopefully its not going to be a new turbo!!!

HELLLPPP!!!

Hey I was told the exact same thing, that the car is overboosting.  Ill hopefully get to speak to a vw specialist later this week and see what advise he has.  Thanks for that Steve_PD!

Your car has been going into limp mode due to the overboosting, limp mode turns the turbo off.
Mine was doing the same and turned out to be the boost pipe above. another reason could be the vains on the turbo are sticking which would mean a new turbo
