sump question
« on: 10 September 2008, 18:28 »
Ok, so today i changed my oil for the first time on my golf.

When tightening the "plug"  back into the sump, it tightens up and then gets loose again. Unfortunately I cannot remember how tight it was when i loosened it taking it out to compare it with.

Is this normal or should it do up until it cant turn anymore? I am worried it might pop off when driving or just leak everywhere.

I am sure its not cross threaded as it turns cleanly but could the thread have died? I have moved the car and there is slight oil underneath the car but i think this is due to the general mess i made doing the job dripping down.

Any thoughts?

Thanks Ed

If you can catch it in a clean/decent tray, I would re-use it.

Remember to buy a new sump plug washer too!

still got the washer. Will I need a new sump gasket too? I am thinking this is a simple case of just bolting the sump on and off?

yeh aload of 10mm bolts round the outside. pretty straight forward. catch the oil in something clean and then pop it back in once the new sump is on.

A new washer is about 20p from ECP.  I fit a new one every time.

you might aswell do the gasket at the same time, saves you doing the same job twice
