If you want the fuel consumption then the diesel would be best. But if your after somthing that you can get alot of power from go for the 1.8t
Golf SOLD. Replaced with a Yamaha Raptor 660 quad and loving it. This will be replaced in August with a Raptor 700. Sold the quad now got a Vectra GSI 2.5 V6 and its the nuts.

How about a remapped TDI? and is there really a lot of difference in standard form?

Diesel engines respond far better to a remap than petrol engines. You get ooodles more torque

How many miles do you do a year roughly?

Reckon a diesel wouldn't do you any harm then.  As long as you're doing a decent amount of miles you're ok.  Otherwise it's false economy getting one considering the extra they cost to obtain :)

About 12k

12k is quite low these days, and with the current fuel prices you might struggle to make difference back, this all depends on how much more the TDI costs over the 1.8T

regardless of the amount of miles you do, the TDI will hold its value for longer than the petrol, personally i'd go for the DERV, however if i was to buy an anniversary i wouldn't do any mods as IMO the anniversaries should be kept as they are.
