Update - Well folks it wasnt the fuel pump relay - i changed that anyway coz when i tested it as advised it felt cool one side. But made no difference.
I also tested the ECU relay and that was cold so will change that as well, got it on order at local dealer.

So will come back to ya when i know more.

im gutted for you, i had hoped that would work:(
i dont know if its an old wifes tale, but have a mate who had an old sirocco with similar problems, and he drilled a hole throught his fuel cap, it was some thing to do with preasure buid upin the fuel tank. you dont have to be that severe just take it off and go for a run.

hope this helps ;)

Thanks for that tip Brains.

If it aint the ECU relay (supposed to be in Today) then i will give your tip a try.

Does sound a bit old wife's tailey but on the other hand with modern injection systems there are return hoses and if one of those is blocked or restricted.......

I had a similar problem on one of my other cars and in the end after all the hassle i found that the exhaust manifold was leaking air causing the misfire.

You could not tell until the engine was pulling between the revs were about 2500,3000,

Well thats another thing to try.
Just had a phone call to tell me the ECU relay is in so will find out if thats the cause in the morning and let you all know!

Mine disappears by 4000 rpm if you are still accelerating. But if you try to hold a high constant speed 90 mph on the motorway it happens again.
You get it as u lift off and again when u accelerate again. So could be a vacuum problem. Fuel or exhaust back pressure, either could be a cause.

Just been looking through this old thread and found it was very close to my problem l've had for months now, l'd changed the leads, cap and rotor and vacuum hoses, then l found this and changed ECU and fuel pump relay woooooooooohooooooooooooo its running like a dream?
lf l hadn't found this site l would of spent loads trying to sort it and l've learned loads along the way.
